LAUSD Town Hall Mtg

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy and school board member Tamar Galatzan will appear Wednesday at a town hall discussion sponsored by the Daily News.  Local parents, students, teachers and residents will be able to ask a range of questions on education and school budgeting during the forum to be moderated by Daily News columnist and radio host Doug McIntyre.

The discussion will likely touch on some of the most pressing issues facing Valley schools, including budget cuts, the future of charter and magnet schools and Deasy’s proposal to put a $270-a-year parcel tax on the ballot to fund local campuses.

The town hall begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, in El Camino Real Charter High School’s Grieb Theater at 5440 Valley Circle Blvd. in Woodland Hills.

Talking to Children about the Disaster in Japan

logo

The earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan have evoked many emotions including sadness, grief and helplessness in many around the world.

As children may be struggling with their thoughts and feelings about the stories and images, they may turn to trusted adults for help and guidance.

Woodlake Budget Cuts

logo
Hopefully you all saw the display in front of our school this morning.  There are 5 chairs with the names of the teachers and our librarian who got their pink slips.  In case you missed it, the teachers are Mrs. Axelrode, Ms. Henry, Mr. Jensen, Mrs. Morales and our librarian, Mrs. Isreal.  It is vital that you send this out to your classes.  Then take it a step further and forward it on to grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins.  Send it to friends who don’t attend Woodlake.  Send it to everyone you know who will take a moment to write or call the appropriate people.
The truth is this:  these things seem overwhelming and we can feel like there’s nothing we can do but THAT’S NOT TRUE.  Let’s gather our troops, form our army and raise our voices LOUD and make us heard!!!
WHAT IS CURRENTLY HAPPENING:

LAUSD handed out 5000 Pink Slips.  It’s not just that these teachers are out of a job, but what it translates for OUR children is that the class sizes will be going up to 29 students per class for the lower grades. This does not include the special ed kids that are going to be mainstreamed into those classes. Those kids will bring the total up substantially, think between two to five per class ON TOP OF THE 29.  Special Ed is not defined just as the ADD, ADHD, etc. it means the moderate to severely disabled kids with aides. Whether or not the aides will still be there is an unresolved question. This is unfair to all the children.  The increased class size means fewer classes hence the displacing/layoff of those teachers with the least tenure.  Personally I find this reprehensible.  It’s detrimental to our children and unfair for the teachers.
WHAT WE NEED TO DO RIGHT NOW:
  • SEND A LETTER THROUGH THE EDUCATE OUR STATE WEBSITE.
Educate Our State is a parent led statewide campaign to improve education in California.  The goal today is to convince the state legislature to simply ALLOW the people to vote whether tax extensions that fund California public school education should continue. They have made it easy to send a letter to the appropriate people.
CLICK HERE TO SEND A LETTER- IT TAKES 2.5 SECONDS!
  • FILL OUT THE BOTTOM OF THE YELLOW FLYER
The teachers were handing out yellow pages today titled “Parents and Guardians Your Child’s Future is at Risk” – fill out the bottom and return it to your teacher.  Have a conversation with them and ask what else you can do.
  • EMAIL AND CALL THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE
Email and call the people below. BOMBARD them.  Be very specific about our demands.
INCLUDE IN YOUR EMAIL OR CONVERSATION:
a. We refuse to let them continue to take away teachers and education from our children.
b. Let them know that a larger class size will not be tolerated. 29:1 is not an acceptable ratio for learning.
c. Tell them you’re angry and demand a change.
d. Tell them to find another way to make their necessary cuts- tell them to take money away from other programs or consultants we don’t need.  Let’s start with Administration at the highest level.  Maybe those administrative positions don’t need so many assistants.  Stop the extra spending like flying in keynote speakers or all of those pens and pads of papers promoting LAUSD.  We need to demand that they fund education the way it should be!

Earning 4 Learning

Earning 4 Learning

Help support Woodlake through the Earning 4 Learning program at Westfield Topanga & Promenade!  When you shop and log your receipts from Westfield Topanga & Promenade, Woodlake will earn points.  The school with the most points will get $2,500 for the school (there are 20 schools in the program).  So, we need your help!

There are a number of ways you can help:

1)  Bring your original receipts dated between 10/1/10 and 3/31/2011 to the Westfield Topanga Concierge located on the lower level under the Dining Terrace.  Your receipts will be logged and returned to you.  Make sure you mention Woodlake Avenue Elementary.  If you prefer, turn your receipts into the collection box in the main office, and we will take care of logging your receipts for you!  All stores, restaurants, the AMC movie theater, Target, etc. that are located at Westfield Topanga & Promenade are eligible.

2)  Purchase a Westfield gift card any time during the program, and Woodlake will earn points for the dollar value, plus 1,000 bonus points!  Make sure you log the gift card at the time of purchase.

3)  Sign up for Earning 4 Learning E-mail.  Enter Woodlake Avenue as the school.  Make sure you confirm your registration (you will be sent an email).  This will earn 1,000 bonus points!

Signup Here

4) “Like” Westfield Topanga & Promenade on Facebook, then visit the discussion tab and type Woodlake Avenue Elementary on the Earning 4 Learning topic.  This will earn 500 bonus points!

Spread the word to your friends and family.  October is double points month!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.  Thank you all very much!
